5.4.7 Arts Center
The 5.4.7 Arts Center is a non-profit community arts centre dedicated to providing opportunities in the arts through classes, exhibits and performances. Our name comes from the date of the tornado that devastated Greensburg on May 4, 2007. This date has been a catalyst for new beginnings in Greensburg and we want to remember this day that has forever changed us.
Studio 804, 3rd-year graduate students in Architecture at the University of Kansas, designed and built the 5.4.7 facility. This building is a LEED platinum building and the first in the state of Kansas. Through the use of many sustainable features such as solar panels and a green roof, this building is very unique and is an exciting addition to the Greensburg landscape. The modern architecture of this facility is an exciting space for the arts to be made available to our community. The building itself is a work of art and also is a teaching tool for residents and visitors to learn about green building practices. The 5.4.7 is located in the heart of Greensburg, next to the Big Well Museum and park, one block from downtown, and one block from the Starlight Public Art Park.
During your first week on-site, the team will work with you to schedule your community exchange hours. Artists-in-Residence will be asked to contribute 6-10 hours per week to the stewardship of arts in their community, in a way that best suits their practice and skills. These activities could include:
- Volunteer one day/week to sit front desk at the Visitors Center
- Work with the local team to do maintenance and repairs to M.T.’s sculptures (experienced metalworkers only)Contribute weekly hours on groundskeeping/landscaping needs (seasonal)
- Hosting public engagement at the 5.4.7 Arts Center (artist talk, workshop, class, program)
- Artists-in-residence will also be responsible for contributing a work made while in residence to the permanent collection at the 5.4.7 Arts Center.
Artists will have access to the shared studio space downstairs, onsite tools and materials, and outdoor acreage to pursue their work and research
The selected Artists-in-Residence will live and work on-site at the M.T. Liggett Art Environment for 4-6 weeks. They will be provided with a fully-furnished one-bedroom apartment located at the Visitors Center, which includes kitchen and laundry facilities.
