Basque BioDesign Center, BDC is a convergence space with the mission of propelling the digital transformation of future materials through experimentation, innovation, and collaboration to create technology - based solutions. The Basque BioDesign Center in Gueñes, Bilbao, serves as a space for experimenting with various digital creation processes and tools. It emphasizes the strategic role of creativity as a productive model, where technology, experimentation, and sustainability converge to promote initiatives aimed at integrating these aspects into the objectives of companies.

BDC is a center where artists, design professionals, creators, and practitioners are educated and guided to develop their own prototypes. Its objective is to equip professionals with strategic management skills that facilitate the transition and redefinition of companies, businesses, and services towards a sustainable and responsible economy. BDC offers different formats of residency opportunities, including production residencies, research residencies and micro residencies. The main area of interest focuses on the development of projects related to Biodesign and the exploration of new materials for various applications. BDC seeks project proposals that combine a creative vision with technology and science. They offer residency opportunities in different formats:

  • production
  • research
  • micro residences

Previous laboratory experience is optional. All levels of scientific knowledge and experience are welcome. Main research axes:

  • Biofabrication, the use of natural waste
  • Biotechnology

During the work period, residents will benefit from an intense time of production and/or research, enriched by the exchange of ideas and experiences among the center’s team. The residences offer a trained professional team and a unique bio-themed infrastructure, providing support to each resident.

The residencies are aimed to artists, designers, architects and professionals who come from any discipline within the visual arts, design, architecture... who can work independently on research linked to the circular economy and biodesign, who wish to have a space to reflection and take advantage of the library (specialized in new practices and biomaterials) to research, study or write, while being immersed in a rural environment with multiple cultural offerings.

Outcome

The Basque Biodesign Center Residency program aims to promote practices that use graphics, textile design, biodesign, digital manufacturing and new media; thus exploring their mutual hybridizations and their possible potentials. All of this, through research and production residencies, promoting exchange, discussion, experimentation and collaborative work.
Residents have the center's machinery and tools at their disposal, where they can experiment with the support of the technicians from each workshop and teachers to carry out their residency project.
