Oaklands Artist in Residence is an artist-run residency programme aimed at facilitating a focused working environment in the mountains, 90kms from Cape Town.

The residency caters for fine art, landscape architecture, writing and research across all fields of study. Residents live and work on Oaklands, a farm that is located in the mountains on the edge of the Limietberg World Heritage Site. Oaklands is home to unique biodiversity, walking routes and a rural environment in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

OaklandsAiR welcomes research and experimental practices that are close to nature. There is space for landscape installations and traditional kilns to be built on the property. There is wild clay and an abundance of material available for natural dying and other nature based experimental practices. The studios can be equipped with a comfortable chair and desk should the artist in residence be focused on writing and research.

Artists are invited to access the network of creative practitioners in Wellington should they wish to use a ceramic kiln, lithographic press or screen printing workshop. All transport to and from Wellington must be arranged with the AiR coordinator.

This residency is self-directed. As an artist, you are expected to be self-sufficient in your practice. However, Oaklands AiR organizes some activities to inspire your artistic process.

  • Opportunity to propose site-specific projects, talks and workshops
  • Outdoor excursions and explorations
  • Trip to Capetown and the Winelands to visit galleries and exhibitions
  • A 10 person artist dinner at Vygie (included in residency fee. Additional guests by arrangement)
