BijlmAiR residency in Amsterdam Zuid Oost

How to Exit and How not to Enter

Tucked away in the Heesterveld Creativ Community- located in one of the last original Bijlmer complexes, you find the BijlmAIR (Bijlmer Artist-in-Residence). Two adjacent appartments have been merged to an alluring artist studio and living. This is the residency program of CBK Zuidoost in collaboration with art space Bradwolff Projects and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. CBK Zuidoost started BijlmAIR in 2001, inviting international- and artists from the Netherlands to come and work and live in the Bijlmer for a while, and develop new work or research connection to the city district Amsterdam Zuid Oost.

Mirjam Linschooten

During the Months May and June artist Mirjam Linschooten resides here. She will be investigating a group of wooden sculptures from West Africa - dismissed by experts as copies. Her research 'How to Exit and How not to Enter' refers to the search for a destination for the objects outside traditional museums (how to exit) without re-presenting them according to a Western model (how not to enter). To this end, she questions art experts and curators and during her residency enters into conversation with people who relate to the objects from a personal or emotional connection, as an equal form of knowledge and expertise.

The outcome of her investigation will be presented during the annual BijlmAiR exhibition at CBK Zuidoost later this year.
