MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies
MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38 is the Goethe-Institut New York’s contemporary art space, made possible with the generous support of MINI. Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, it has provided for curatorial experimentation in the tradition of the German “Kunstverein” since 2008.
Its mission is to introduce new international perspectives to the downtown art community and to foster dialogue within the greater aesthetic and political context of New York and the United States. Ludlow 38 was initially programmed by a different German “Kunstverein” each year: Kunstverein München in 2008, followed by the European Kunsthalle and Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. In the last three years, the trajectory of exhibitions has been determined by annually rotating curatorial residents from Germany, who bring their own unique perspectives to the art space. In 2011, this residency program for young curators was launched in partnership with MINI and renamed as MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38. The Goethe-Institut New York promotes intercultural dialogue between the United States and Germany by offering opportunities for the public to interact with themes and questions relevant to Germany’s cultural, social, intellectual, and political spheres. The Goethe-Institut’s two downtown locations at 30 Irving Place and MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38, offer a broad spectrum of programs and exhibitions to local audiences, providing a forum for German-American exchange in New York.
Over the course of the year, the Curatorial Resident is charged with planning, organizing, and realizing a total of six exhibitions at MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38. He or she is expected to utilize this opportunity to program the space with a variety of critical and engaging formats over the course of the year. Ludlow 38's aim is to function as a lens through which the newest European and global positions can be placed within the perspective of the aesthetic and political context of New York and the United States. The candidate is to place their work into the context of other initiatives in the greater New York area and the United States on the whole.
