Description

GRUUT seeks to connect artists from different disciplines and support artistic creation. Conceived as a research laboratory, this cultural project offers talks, workshops and other events in Brussels, as well as artist residencies at Château de Gruuthuyse (Oostkamp). The aim is to question the broad spectrum of the creative process and to promote diversity, both within GRUUT’s artist network and in the diversity of their practices.

GRUUT organises two residencies a year, during the summer, at Gruuthuyse Castle in Oostkamp (Flanders). Following a call for artists, eight artists from different disciplines are selected to develop a personal project. They’re interested in what the artist wants to explore and innovate in their practice, as well as assuring diversity in the group and the artistic mediums.

During the residency, each artist have their own room but can also work in shared common spaces. They are free to find the level of isolation or collectivity they need. Meals mark the pace of the day and bring the group together. Some afternoons and evenings hosts collective activities or discussions, held by the residency coordinators or the residents themselves ; a participant sharing their work, a creative exercice to unlock inspiration, or group discussions to share our process, our struggles and our breakthroughs.

In addition to the summer residencies, GRUUT organises also a mini-residency called LAB : the LAB lasts three days over a weekend, and takes place only during the day, in Brussels. The shorter format, that aims to be more accessible, focuses on artistic creation without the pressure of a result. To activate the six participating artists' spontaneity, a common theme is unveiled the day before the LAB.

The aim of these residencies is, on the one hand, to enrich the professional network of each participant and allow new collaborations to emerge, and on the other hand, to stimulate artistic research.

Outcome

GRUUT's residencies offer a space dedicated to creative exploration without any condition or specific outcome. They consider themselves an artistic laboratory and focus on research, the process, and experimentation.
The two-week residency ends with a public "parcours d'artistes" (an open studio tour on the Castle grounds) during which artists share their research and practice.

Studio Information

The Castle does not have artists studios and workshops. It is furbished as a living space, and participants bring their own tools and supplies (apart from a piano already on site). But the spaces are diverse and adaptable to the artists needs. These spaces include: A large living-room, a piano room, a dining room with a very large table suitable to convert in working stations, a library, an orangerie, cellars convertible in workshops. The Castle grounds are very large and can also be occupied.

The artists are asked to bring anything they require for their project and their practice.

Accommodation Information

The Castle has eight different rooms to host eight artists. Each room varies in size, some have a small lavatory, but otherwise three bathrooms are easily accessible and are shared between the residents.

The organisers ask residents beforehand what are their needs and habits: some require to be alone or have access to a comfortable desk, and are given larger rooms that can become their principal working area. Others are given the smaller rooms: due to their practice, they might need a much larger or less delicate space, like the cellars, or prefer the artistic stimulation of the common areas. The residents are, in all cases, free to roam and settle where they wish to create, the castle giving many different options from the living rooms, dining room, library, orangerie, to the large outdoor park.

Technical Information

The castle has a lot of parking space, making it easy for the participants to come by car with all their equipment, and the train station is very close (5min walk), connecting the castle directly to Bruges, Gent or Brussels.

Unfortunately, stairs lead up to every entrance of the castle, and all the rooms and bathrooms are on the second level. It is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
