Description

Glasgow Ceramics Studio was established in 1995 by six graduates of Glasgow school of art. It was primarily set up as a workshop providing ceramics making facilities and studio spaces for professionally trained ceramic artists. Over the last twenty-five years it has grown in size from an original membership of six artists to its current membership of twenty-one, along with 40 members accessing the 'Open Access Membership' scheme, in the studio adjacent.

The resources of GCS have developed during this time and it is now recognised as the most well equipped ceramic community studio in Scotland. It currently offers a purposely-renovated group studio, providing each of its members with a generous private workspace.

Glasgow Ceramic Studio provides regular classes which are open to the public and community groups as well as facilitating outreach workshops. It also runs occasional specialised masterclasses in ceramics and offers firing facilities to artists as well as consultation services.

Six years ago, Glasgow Ceramic Studio incorporated a residency space into its premises and since then, has been offering a free internship with mentorship for an annual period of six months to new graduates. This initiative was developed to compensate for the new deficit of Scottish graduates within the Scottish sector. It aimed to encourage Scottish design graduates to remain in Scotland and attract new ceramics graduates educated outside Scotland to relocate to Scotland.

Glasgow Ceramics Studio now intends to develop its profile as a progressive professional centre for ceramic arts by instigating a financially sustainable paid graduate internship and international residency, as well as an external membership scheme.

The residency programme is aimed at mid-career ceramic artists. Artists with 5 years of established practice are preferred but this is not essential. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to their practice and a desire to furthering the field of ceramic art. We are interested in knowing what you could contribute to expanding the discourse and knowledge of ceramics in Scotland.

Glasgow Ceramics Studio is a not-for-profit run space, which provides studio spaces, memberships and access to kilns for local artists. You can read more information about our studio here: https://glasgowceramicstudio.com/

Glasgow, home to the renowned Glasgow School of Art and the annual international GI art festival, is a vibrant artistic and diverse city and possesses a large contemporary art community. It offers many museums and galleries as well as easy access to Scotlands capital Edinburgh, and the Scottish Highlands. We would encourage our participating artist to spend time in different parts of the country, where desired or as part of their practice.

Outcome

There is no expectation of finished work. Rather, they wish to provide an opportunity to come and experience Scotland, the ceramic field in the UK, and to promote informal international ceramic knowledge exchange. They are open to letting the selected artist propose what they would like to learn, discover and deliver through the residency.

Successful applicant will be asked to contribute to a skill exchange or an information sharing event.
They are open to the resident’s artists interpretation and suggestions of what this is, but for example, this event could take the form of a class or public talk. Talks would not provide an additional fee but skill exchange would, dependant on uptake. The aim is to provide an opportunity for resident artists to undertake several events around Scotland (as a potential to receive income), but that would be optional and dependant on international visa restrictions.

Studio Information

The residency offers a free studio space, located in a shared open plan ceramics studio.
Its facilities include a specific kiln room with a large trolley gas kiln, a small gas kiln and seven electric kilns of various capacities.

Additionally, you will have access to the studio which includes

The agreement with Glasgow School of Art Summer Accommodation costs of £28 per night for a single room in a shared flat. However, this may change over the years. There is also a sublet (room in private house) which is reasonably priced and located close to the studio in the East End of Glasgow.
There will also be other options available in the city and although Glasgow Ceramic Studio cannot offer its own accommodation on-site, they can offer to help you search.
