  • Breakfast is included in the artist fee.
  • It is possible to buy vegetables, eggs, fruits, spices or other fresh, biological products from Villa R garden, for a special price.
  • Villa R owners can sometimes help artists, for example to pick them up from the airport, take them to buy artistic materials, food etc.
Paid by artist:

The fee for each selected artist in residence at Villa R is 300€ per week, 600€ for two weeks. If artists wish to stay longer than a week, but still less than two weeks, they agree to pay 45€ for each additional day. Breakfast is included in the fee; there is a possibility (for additional fee) to have all the meals in Villa R. Artists will be required to cover eventual damage and/or loss within Villa R.

The location of the residence requires the rent of a car. Artists can decide to share these expenses and also decide where and what to rent according to their needs. These expenses are not included in the rent.

Application guidelines:

Emerging, mid-career and established artists working within the creative field, including visual arts, music, video, literature, performance, theater, cinema, fashion etc., without limitation of age, gender and nationality are encouraged to apply. Application must include:

  • A cover letter that describes the purpose of your stay and which kind of work you wish to produce in relation to your career and/or personal development (PDF)
  • Curriculum Vitae that includes both professional and few basic biographic info (PDF)
  • 10 images of artworks in jpg (if you are a visual artist). One or more links to a webpage or other links that show your professional activity and former work.

Make sure to include also your contact info and preferred period of residency (1 or 2 weeks in April – May – June – September – October). All documents should be emailed to: [email protected].

Artists can apply for a week maximum two during the months of April, May, June, September or October. It is possible to apply also for other periods of the year, this can be agreed with the hosts according to their disposition.

The required documents can be written either in English or Italian. Incomplete applications won't be considered. There is no application fee; if selected, the artist will be required to pay in advance a small part of the artist fee. Price in advance is 100€ to book a week stay 200€ for two weeks stay, and €150 for 10 days per person.

Description

Villa R is a new private residency for artists. It is the first international point of reference for contemporary art in the city of Messina, Sicily. It was designed in 1990 by the two owners, Iolanda Vacalebre and Nicola Rustica, who used the villa for artistic and musical productions for many years. Since April 2013, the owners decided to offer most of the spaces of the villa for intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange with professionals (both foreign and Italian). These activities aim especially to the creation of new projects and artworks in a stimulating environment, in contact with other artists and with nature. The residence has wide space for artistic production of any size and media.

Studio Information

The residence has wide space for artistic production of any size and media. Artists have the possibility to work both in a light atelier of 80 square meters, with big windows, or outside in a space of about 2000 square meters, directly in contact with the earth, without limits of dimentions and media of work.

Accommodation Information

There is space to accomodate artists in 3 comfortable and spacious rooms (2 single and 1 double). Partners and family are welcome, but required to pay as much as each artist in residency. Therefore, people who come along with selected artists, count as artists themselves. Maximum number of artists per residency is 4.

 

Technical Information
  • It is possible to use the kitchen to cook. It is also possible to have meals prepared by the owners for a small additional cost.
  • Wireless internet is provided.
  • In the atelier there is a big table where is possible to work and discuss ideas in group.
  • A printer is available.
  • It is possible to consult many books about art, meditation, spirituality etc. (in Italian).
Location

Villa R is located on a hill, it offers a view on the sea, valley and Eolie Islands. There is a distance of about 4km from the villa to very popular seasides. The villa is on accessible distance from the touristic destination Milazzo, Taormina, Etna and transports direct to the Eolie Islands.
