Description

Soshenko 33 consists of art workshops located in a villa on the northern outskirts of Kyiv, originally founded in 1949 as a "House of Creativity" for artists. In the Soviet art system, this was analogous to modern residency programs. Since the 1960s, the building has functioned as creative workshops for graduate students and was part of the USSR Academy of Arts. At the moment it is an alternative space of the National Academy of Fine Arts of Ukraine. Soshenko 33 is an educational and artistic center that includes a program of art residencies.

The Soshenko 33 residency program focuses on research-based art practices related to education, urbanism, ecology, socially engaged art, collaboration with local artists and researchers, and engaging with local communities.

Outcome

Public talk/presentation, educational program, exhibition - depending on the topic and program of a particular residency

Studio Information

1 large 45 m2 studio and several smaller studios.
Artists engaged in research-based projects.

Accommodation Information

Soshenko 33 does not have its own rooms, but we normally provide accommodation for residents, renting an apartment in the city. This will depend on each specific open call. 8 residents can be hosted at once. The possibility of hosting partners and family depends on each specific call.

Technical Information

Authentic Soviet pressing machines (2 etching presses, 1 relief printmaking press); woodworking tools (miter saw, angle grinder, screw guns, power jigsaw, grinder); digital printer; work desks in each studio; foldable chairs for public events. Additional equipment may be provided based on residents’ needs.

Location

The residency is located on the northern outskirts of Kyiv, in a green area. It is a two-storey villa built in 1949 with an authentic interior. The house is surrounded by an old orchard, and a private residential area is nearby. There is a direct commute to the city center.

Here you can see the project from Vicky Thornton, developed in the residency and supported by i-Portunus, EU Mobility Scheme for artists and cultural professionals.
