The residency houses 13 studio apartments, versatile larger spaces, as well as a gallery space on the ground floor. Local residents as well as international artists and residents from a wide range of creative backgrounds can make use of this unique public space. This provides a forum for local engagement as well as an open dialogue between the artists and the community. It is an initiative from the Sapporo Municipal Government. Tenjin-yama Art Studios offers ongoing residencies which are funded by the artist and provide them with a studio apartment, use of all the public facilities and a wealth of local knowledge from the staff. The ongoing residencies are open to any individual or group in any creative field who need access to activity in Sapporo, a space to research or produce work from, or a base from which to explore Hokkaido for creative means. Residencies that offer financial support to artists are detailed at the time of open calls.
The first activity of Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio that appeared in the public realm in May 2014 included the Artist in residence (hereafter AIR), and it coincided with the Sapporo International Art Festival held in the same city. Since its seminal year, Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio has delivered the AIR program with a stipend for international artists working in the field of visual art. This AIR program only happens in wintertime and is arranged by the program director and by AIS Planning - a general incorporated association that manages the facilities of Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio. In 2021, in accordance with measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, AIR is accepting remote participation (online residency) where the physical presence of the overseas artists is not required. The program will move to the period between the end of summer and the autumn.
The participating artistʼs previous material (portfolio collection of works etc.) profile and submitted pictures will be open to the public as project archives and can be used for Studio and City of Sapporo publicity in the media printed matter and the website. The record of the residence program such as pictures and videos can be used for publicity as well.
Program format: Through this AIR opportunity, the invited artists will research Sapporo/Hokkaido in collaboration with SAPPORO TENJINYAMA ART STUDIO, culminating in new works/projects. Depending on the progress of the works/projects, the end results will be presented in either Sapporo or Hokkaido during the final stage of the program.
For the ongoing residencies, there is no mandatory outcome, but public activity in any form is actively encouraged and welcomed. The outcome for any specific open call programs will be specified in the application guidelines.
