Description

The Chartreuse is a place of residence for playwrights, theatre translators and companies (theatre, dance, circus, street arts, digital arts, etc.) that integrate a contemporary author or text into their creative process, and whose work requires time for research, experimentation and creation. La Chartreuse welcomes both established and emerging artists.

Two forms of residency are offered:

  • Individual authors' residencies: They are accessible to authors who have obtained a commission or a writing grant from a national or regional institution for the project that is the subject of the residency request: Artcena, CNL Commission d'aide aux auteurs, Beaumarchais SACD, Centres Régionaux des Lettres but also the European network of Cultural Encounter Centres (Odyssey grant from the ACCR) and foreign organisations: Wallonia/Chartreuse Joint Committee, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec et du Canada, French Cultural Centres Abroad. The duration of the individual residencies is established according to the needs of the author and the availability of the Chartreuse. The average duration of an individual residency is between 3 and 5 weeks. It can last up to a maximum of 3 months.
  • Group residences: They are aimed at companies (theatre, dance, circus, street arts, digital arts, etc.) that integrate a contemporary author or text into their creative process and whose work requires time for research, experimentation and creation. Priority is given to projects where the author is present during the residency. For these collective residencies, the resident artists benefit from workspaces adapted to the progress of their work, workroom at the table, rehearsal room or – more exceptionally – the Tinel performance hall. The duration of the collective residencies is established according to the projects proposed by the artists and the availability of the Chartreuse. It lasts between 2 and 4 weeks.

Whether individual or collective, the residencies are, if possible, and according to modalities appropriate to the project and chosen by mutual agreement between the management of the Chartreuse and the company, the subject of a presentation to an audience (laboratory, meeting with a class or with a group of audiences, nights of the Chartreuse, public rehearsal, etc.). However, the Chartreuse reserves the right not to offer, depending on its calendar of activities and the duration of the residency, a systematic public presentation of "exit from residency". Similarly, residents or companies, if they feel that their work does not yet allow it, are not required to participate in a public meeting.

Studio Information

For collective residences, La Chartreuse provides free workspace, a work room at the table, a rehearsal room or – more exceptionally – the Tinel performance hall. The workspace was proposed by the management of the Chartreuse to the company after an assessment of the technical needs and the degree of progress of the project.
The teams can organise their working time as they wish, except for the Tinel room, where the presence of a manager from the Chartreuse is essential (the Tinel is therefore only accessible in his presence and at the times agreed in advance with the management). For the other workspaces, the keys are entrusted to the company and access to the premises is therefore free, subject to the hours reserved for cleaning and respect for the neighbourhood, in particular with regard to noise.

Accommodation Information

The artists are accommodated free of charge in the former cells of the Carthusian Fathers, which have been transformed into accommodation. All these cells, with the exception of the collective housing which have a collective kitchen, have their own equipped kitchen area, bathroom, Wi-Fi access. Bed linen and towels are provided by the Chartreuse and changed once a week.

Collective housing may be collective housing and the members of a company may share the same accommodation: single room but common sanitary facilities. Some units also have bedrooms with 2 beds or an extra bed in the living room. Depending on the availability of accommodation, the Chartreuse reserves the possibility of offering this bed for a second person of the company.

The Chartreuse reserves the right not to pay for the accommodation of members of a team who are not present for the entire duration of the residency, as well as the accommodation of the administrative staff of the companies. A list of hotels or B&Bs in Villeneuve lez Avignon can be provided on request. In this case, the accommodation will be paid for by the company.

The artists undertake to live "alone" in their home: the Chartreuse does not accept the presence of people (families or friends) who are not part of the artistic or technical team of the project during the residency, neither in the accommodations nor in the table d'hôtes. Similarly, residents are not allowed to bring non-residents (families, friends, public, professionals, press, etc.) into their home or into the adjoining gardens, even for a simple visit.
