The stipend, currently 120,000 forints/month, is calculated to cover living expenses during the residency, to fund participation in cultural events and the purchase of materials - not least, books - that can enrich the translator's knowledge of Hungarian language and culture; and to partly defray travel expenses.

Application guidelines:

Those wishing to apply for residencies must submit to the Hungarian Translators House Foundation a work plan, a list of publications, a resume, and a contract or letter of intent from a publisher pertaining to the work to be translated during the residency. There is no application form. Applications are continually reviewed by the foundation's five-member board of trustees.

The Hungarian Translators’ House in Balatonfüred invites translators who translate Hungarian literature into their own language. The house entertains contacts with Hungarian and foreign cultural institutions, universities and publishing houses. It organizes translation seminars for young and talented translators, and publishes an annual magazin and a newsletter. It is headed by the Hungarian Translators’ House Foundation (Budapest) and is a member of the Halma network and of RECIT (Réseau Européendes Centres Internationaux de Traducteurs littéreaires).

Outcome

The Translators House also hosts small-scale cultural events, symposiums, and workshops.

The residency is situated in an over 100 years old town-house with six rooms, a library and a seminar room.

Location

The Translators House is situated 125 kilometers south of Budapest on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Balatonfüred is on the northern bank of the Balaton, surrounded by rolling hills and boasting a Mediterranean climate. The town was declared a spa in the 18th century because of its effervescent healing springs, making it a meeting place for progressive politicians, artists and the aristocracy from the early 19th century into the thirties.
