Description

The mission of the FOR-SITE foundation is to facilitate the creation, understanding and exhibition of new art about place. The artwork does not necessarily have to be created at the residency site

Studio Information

The workshop facility is a 1,600 sq. ft. mutable workshop, classroom and events space. The building is a poured-in-place concrete bunker tucked into a sloping ridgeline, thereby minimizing its presence in the landscape and allowing the ridge crest to remain undisturbed. With large open areas for fabrication, as well as a separate catering kitchen and student storage/washroom/changing area.

Accommodation Information

Designed by architect Michelle Kaufmann, the Glidehouse is an updated modular version of the Eichler with an open plan for living, dining and cooking. The prefab building process uses sustainable materials, creating a cost-effective, eco-friendly structure.

Location

The FOR-SITE residency is on 47 acres of dense forest, high peaks, granite domes and clear water in the Sierra Foothills near Nevada City. The entire town district, one of the most charming Gold Rush mining towns still in existence with old gold mines and Victorian architecture, dates back to the 1850s and is a National Landmark. The town has diverse mix of inhabitants and is home to an extraordinary wealth of cultural attractions.
